wanna be a surfer?

If the answer is ‘YES’, then I would highly recommend getting this guide book! Especially if you or someone you know is still just a kid. That way, they will get a major head start and avoid the mistakes made by many beginners who simply just do not understand the sport of surfing. ENJOY AND HAVE FUN!

About The Book

I was super proud of it when I finally completed the piece. Of course I had to show it off to my parents and family. My mom loved it so much, she told me I should publish it and try and sell it. Back then, that advice went in one ear and out the other. Fast forward 30 years, now the book is finally published.

It is primarily for kids who are considering trying the sport of surfing waves. Not the internet. I have surfed for most of my 51 year old life. Through this experience I have learned a few subtle things that I just wanted to pass along. They are meant to be funny, but I believe all who surf should know. I hope you enjoy, learn and then go catch some waves!

So…YouWannaBeASurfer started out as a project for my Illustration class, while getting my Commercial Art Degree at Flagler College. My professor at the time was Don M. He was a very hard teacher and was a stickler for craftsmanship, compostition of space and presentation. All of which I struggled with. Needless to say, my grades reflected this. This little book was the only project I got an A on during that semester.

I am not sure how much time was given for our class to produce our books. Maybe a week or two tops. But I remember spending countless hours working on the illustrations, while learning the computer in order to build it digitally, then print it. Understand that the year was 1994 and computer graphics software was not near as user-friendly as it is today.

This book is dedicated to my late, little sister Kelly, who passed away in 2004, my mother, who encouraged me for 30 years to get it published and my college professor Don, who inspired me to do the project in the first place.

About the author.

My name is Michael Birchall. I am 51 years old and I live in St. Augustine Beach, Florida. I have been riding waves since I could walk. I have two boys, Kai and Von and am engaged to be married to my fiancé Lindsey.

I got my Commercial Art degree from Flagler College. By trade, I am a Graphic Designer. I had an agency for 21 years called Troika Studio. I closed it up in July of 2021 and now just freelance. I took this past year to finalize and publish this book. It only took me 30 years in total, but now it is finally here. I hope your kids enjoy it as much as I enjoy the sport of surfing.

Surfing waves in the ocean is an experience that one has to do in order to understand it. It’s simple, yet complicated. Fun, yet dangerous. A sport and a lifestyle. I am grateful that I did it.
